Honey
Honey is made by bees from the nectar of flowers. However, it’s not suitable for everyone:
If none of these points are issues for you, honey has a distinctive flavour and can enhance your cooking and baking.

- Honey’s sweetness comes mainly from glucose and fructose, so it is in this respect similar to ordinary sugar. Therefore, it’s not suitable for those on an anti-candida diet.
- For the same reason diabetics need to assess the extent to which they can eat honey.
- If you’re concerned about your oral health, honey has no advantage over sugar as it also causes tooth decay.
- Honey has more calories than sugar: a tablespoon has 64 calories compared to 46 calories in the same volume of sugar. If you’re trying to lose weight, there are other sugar substitutes that will work better for you even when taking into consideration that honey is sweeter than sugar and you don’t need to use as much.
- Honey is an animal product, and therefore, it’s avoided by vegans.
- Honey may contain small amounts of bacterial spores which can produce botulism toxin. This can be dangerous to infants, and therefore, it should not be given to babies who are under one year old.
